Oh Deer
February 8, 2009
Among the many reasons I moved to Eastport, Maine after living in Los Angeles for nearly 19 years, was the longing to be in a more rural environment. I tired of the big city, with the traffic and the noise.
A few days ago while on my way home from the grocery store, there were about 8 deer feeding on the side of the road. After sitting in the car with my daughter, Juliet, for a while watching them, I decided to drive home to get my camera. By the time we got back the deer were on the move, scared off by a big rig passing by and a woman walking a dog.
We drove around for a bit, took a few photos of the sky, which is always colorful here and low and behold the deer returned and started making their way across the street:
After crossing the street, they made their way down through a field:
It was easy to see which direction they were traveling. We followed them, driving through the neighborhood streets until we caught up with them in a yard a few streets away:
There we found the home-owner out feeding the deer. He told us he gets about a dozen a day. It’s tough for them this time of year, he explained so he feeds them dried corn. With encouragement Juliet walked up pretty close and took quite a few photos:
I know not everyone would appreciate the longing to live among nature, or closer to it, but days like this are why I am here.
Again this afternoon we found the deer feeding at their favorite spot. It’s such a joy to watch these lovely creatures and it certainly helps to beat the winter blues.
