St. Patrick’s Day Reflection on the Great Famine of Ireland

pop_change_1841_1851While you are preparing your St Patrick’s Day dinner today is a good day to reflect on the history of the Great Famine which effected Ireland for generations to come. The traditional Irish-American Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner is a favorite in my home. Today I as I prepare my St. Patrick’s dinner to share with my family, I reflect on one the key components of the dinner, potatoes, and all that the poor in Ireland suffered for its reliance on the potato as its main source of food.

The Great Famine of 1845-1849 is perhaps the most significant event in Ireland’s history. It was a catastrophic event in the history of Europe and the considered the worst famine ever recorded in the world. The Great Famine primarily effected the poor in Ireland, which accounted for 2/3’s of the Irish population. This majority population were also “dangerously dependent on the potato for survival,” and the potato had a limited storage life of one year. The short shelf life made it impossible to compensate from stored crops between good and bad harvests. This set a dangerous precedent for famine in Ireland in the nineteenth century coupled with the British government’s grave disinterest in its closest colony, Ireland.

The land system in Ireland at this time was quite precarious and volatile at the time. Relationships between landlords and tenants were on tenuous terms financially and politically. England’s industrial revolution had had disastrous effects on the many “cottage industries in Ireland in the 1830s and 1840s, especially the weaving and spinning of textiles, and many hundreds of thousands were left without employment,” that supported the working class Irish people. There was little investment being made into the Irish economy, instead, those who could afford to invest invested outside of Ireland in Britain. (more…)

Daily Affirmations: Redefining

Life is always changing and evolving, nothing stays the same. We are not static beings, we are human and we are capable making conscious decision about who we are and how we live our lives on a day to day basis. This Louise Hay quite a great affirmation for those times of profound change we undergo in which we redefine who we are:

“I am constantly redefining who I am and how I want to live.” – Louise L. Hay

Quote of the Day: Sam Keen

My soul-searching, spiritual journey has taken my on some very interesting paths in order to find spiritual truths that answer the questions stirring in my soul. My library is filled with books on various spiritual genre’s. Typically I find if an author speaks to me, I will read most of what they publish.

Wisdom is found in so many places, books are just one of the many avenues a seeker can travel on, in order to find their own truth. Nature is of course, another favorite avenue for seeking truths.

Among my favorite books throughout the years is Sam Keen’s Hymns to an Unknown God: Awakening The Spirit In Everyday Life. The quote below is a favorite from that book:

“Once you have discovered your vocation, it is by no means certain that it will have anything to do with your occupation. A soulful occupation requires us to refrain from using our creativity in socially harmful ways.” – Sam Keen: Hymns to an Unknown God

Daily Affirmations: I Will Do My Best

As a writer I often struggle with my voice questioning whether my words are touching others lives as I intend them to. Artists often struggle with their creative talents and find it difficult at times to properly express themselves through their given medium. This is true for all people, as it speaks to a question of whether or not I am good enough, or capable of doing a good job in any vocation. It is important for us to learn to cross that bridge and put self-doubt behind us when it arises.

The bottom-line is that all people at one time or another suffer from self-doubt. In these moments of self-doubt, we each must remind ourselves that in doing our best, we will succeed…

Today, I honor the place in me that knows who I am. I am filled with a warm sense of comfort by honoring all that I am. I thank the Spirit that moves through me and brings my creations into fruition. I go forth on this day, knowing that I will do my best, in all that I do.

Daily Affirmations: One Goal At A Time

sea star sandy pointSome days I get ahead of myself, thinking of all the things I need to get done in the future. I worry myself in procrastination mode, instead of attacking one goal at a time. When I see this behavior rising up and taking over my day, I know it is time to shift direction and get back on task.

I re-mind myself that I am only human, I can only accomplish so much in a day. I stop, take a deep breath, organize the priorities of my goals and then seek to accomplish each goal, one goal at a time. It will get done. I affirm to myself that I can do it. One step, one goal at a time.

Daily Affirmations: Abundance

refuge springFinancial security and abundance for so many people is an issue that seems so difficult to achieve. I have struggled with this issue throughout much of my adult life, owning two small businesses and raising a daughter alone. The struggle and the worry of having enough to make ends meet at times seems so overwhelming that it is easy to give in to despair. But despair is not an option, because despair does not fix the problems that weight us down.

When you go through life often living as austerely as humanly possible you learn lessons if you keep an open heart and open mind. This affirmation from Louise Hay has helped me through some tough times in the past, when it seemed that there was not enough to pay the bills and put food on the table:

My income is only a channel; it is not my source. My supply comes from one source, the Universe itself, and it can never run dry. ~ Louise Hay

I have learned over the years to think in terms of abundance and to give thanks for all that I do have. This requires learning to re-think certain aspects of your life. Inner change comes from forming a different style of communication with yourself and being open to the idea that the Universe will provide. How we think about things in our lives makes a difference. Words can easily manifest into intent when repeated often. I re-mind myself daily:  “I am abundant, I have all that I need.”
