Clearing the Path

I’ve been spending a lot of time in recent days thinking about clearing the path. The metaphorical path is the journey we are in life. Sometimes that journey gets impeded with blocks and distractions that take out us out of the realm of our journey and either leads us down a different path, or it just slows us down on our way to the destination.

As I spend a lot of time online, Facebook has been a great impediment that distracts me from my goals, so one of the ways I am clearing my path is to spend less time on Facebook and freeing up more time to do the things that give me a gratifying and satisfying life.

While Facebook is a wonderful avenue to keep in touch with people we care about and love, if one stays too long on Facebook, it becomes a repetitious habit that can bog us down in the bad news and fake news, a host of memes that are meaningless.

As a creative person, I I love that I can share things with others on Facebook, but in using Facebook more, I use my blog less. It is time for that to change. I don’t exactly have a clear view of what those changes look like, but I do know that they are necessary.

So in the coming days/weeks/months, I hope to spend more time posting here and sharing my creative work.

Food For Thought: Anger

Life is short and life is precious. I will never, ever understand why some people choose to live a life filled with anger and hatred.

We’ve all known these people, the ones who go to great lengths to foist their anger and hatred on others, while claiming when you might call them on it, that you are the angry person. Anger breeds anger, by its very energy emitted by others; it is a contagious, toxic thought form that permeates people and relationships, replacing loving thought with angry thought, filling up light filled spaces with darkness.

My experience with angry people is that that they carry baggage from the past that they can’t seem to let go of, even when they claim they have.

Forgiveness is the antidote to anger. Love is the antidote to fear. Be kind to one another… It is the root of compassion and the foundation of love for all beings.

Food For Thought: It’s Never Too Late

It is never too late… I remind myself often of these words, by Louise Hay:

“My life is just beginning, and I love it. So many wonderful opportunities are on the horizon.”

Age is irrelevant… Every day we are faced with changes and opportunities. Every day is a new beginning. Every day is a change to evolve, to grow, to learn and to make a difference in the world.

Be the light you want to see…

Oatmeal Walnut Cherry Cookies

This fabulous Oatmeal Walnut Cherry cookies recipe is via a friend on Facebook.

Ingredients:

1.5 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1.75 cups oatmeal
1/2 cup walnut pieces
1 cup dried cherries
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp ginger
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp cloves
1 tbsp vanilla
1 tbsp molasses

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 325
  • Mix dry ingredients
  • Mix wet ingredients (including sugar)
  • Add together
  • Use nonstick cookie pans or spray/grease pans
  • 10-14 minutes per batch, depending on size
  • The cookies will be very soft cookies, don’t overcook…

Poem: Ode to Cappy

Ode to Cappy

Another soul slipped through the crack today.
Gone, gone, gone
From this river, he will be,
Never again to trawl the sea.

Last summer he pulled in his last net,
He hauled up his last catch,
And he shucked his last scallop shell.
He never threw the little ones back.

Cappy caught the last fishing boat today, ending the pain
But I suspect if you asked him where he was going
He’d have said,
I’m going straight to hell, cracking a toothless smile.

I remember the last time I saw him
That smile stretched as wide as the sea
Acting like an eccentric fisherman
However, that might be.

Cappy had a soft spot, much like a tender, tiny scallop
The ones he never threw back,
Those were the most precious
He would crow, and of course he would know.

We saw an angel in the clouds today
Not long after Cappy’s name came up in conversation
He’s still hanging on to the life raft you said
Not ready to be set free.

Cappy was of the river and the sea
And they were too, of Cappy
He knew every river inlet intimately
He lived to roam the sea.

I took a picture of that angel cloud
I didn’t know why when.
Not long after I dropped you off, the word came
Light a candle for Tommy, he has passed.

Some folks will say
This river will never be the same without Cappy
I cannot help
But agree.

Poet’s note: This piece was written March 9, 2017 to an old friend who passed quietly away from cancer. Studying a variety of poetic forms in graduate poetry workshop at Salem State University, elegies are one of the many poetic forms we’ve read and some have written for class. I’m working on a series of 8 – 10 poems for my final in my class, as this piece isn’t to be focused in that collection, I wanted to share it here on my blog. I do have another elegy that I do plan to include in my final collection.

Food for Thought: Fear is a Subjective Emotion

Fear is a subjective emotion. We can choose to be ruled by our fear or we can choose to reach beyond our instinctive, individual emotions that drive our fear and look outside of ourselves and all of the things in the world that drive our fears, and see beauty in world.

Everyday the news is subjecting us to the latest stories that fill us with worry, concern, outrage, and fear. Constantly following the news, feeds our fear and plays on the subjective aspects of fear because we a choosing to let our fears control our lives. Not long ago the communication industry was not a 24/7 industry that played so heavily on our psyches.

Step back. Spend less time on social media. Disconnect. Turn off your devices. Free yourself from the outrage machine. Take a break from the news. Get outside. Take a walk. Breathe in the fresh air. Listen to the bird song. Connect with nature. Do anything that is not connected to following the latest news that pummel our senses and leaves us senseless and sometimes riddled with fear.

You can control your fear by replacing it with healthy thoughts and emotions. Be in the moment. Choose happiness over fear.
