My soul-searching, spiritual journey has taken my on some very interesting paths in order to find spiritual truths that answer the questions stirring in my soul. My library is filled with books on various spiritual genre’s. Typically I find if an author speaks to me, I will read most of what they publish.
Wisdom is found in so many places, books are just one of the many avenues a seeker can travel on, in order to find their own truth. Nature is of course, another favorite avenue for seeking truths.
Among my favorite books throughout the years is Sam Keen’s Hymns to an Unknown God: Awakening The Spirit In Everyday Life. The quote below is a favorite from that book:
“Once you have discovered your vocation, it is by no means certain that it will have anything to do with your occupation. A soulful occupation requires us to refrain from using our creativity in socially harmful ways.” – Sam Keen: Hymns to an Unknown God

“Life is a river which flows through me, washes me clean of judgment, cleansing me with the waters of compassion.” The metaphor of life being a river that flows through me has always been a metaphor that I can identify with. I grew up on the Merrimack River in Massachusetts, and despite living nearly 20 years in Los Angeles, there has always been a river flowing near to where I have lived. A river is a powerful force in my heart and mind. Especially a river close to the shore, as the Merrimack River is, here where I live in coastal Massachusetts. Not only is there a natural downstream current here, but there is also a daily tidal flow, in which the river flows upstream as the tide comes in twice daily.
I have often had the opportunity to live the by the grace of the river’s flow, experiencing the renewal of the seasons and the release of judgement with the tides. In a moment, when we least expect it, we sometimes find that the river leads that which is precious back to us, as in the course of human foibles life continues to flow as does the river.
“I honor my own integrity and the integrity of others. I am guided by love. I allow myself to feel the love that is guiding others. Like the earth, I enjoy seasons of renewal. I forgive shortcomings and failures, arrogance and shortsightedness. I allow such human foibles to be dissolved in the graceful flow of life ongoing. Life is a river which flows through me, washes me clean of judgment, cleansing me with the waters of compassion. I allow life to be both tender and clear. I choose the longer view of wisdom over the more short-lived satisfaction of being “right”.” – Julia Cameron: Heart Steps

“Not all those who wander are lost” is a line in the poem, ‘All that is gold does not glitter,’ in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings
:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king
Tolkien was one of my favorite authors in my youth, when I was discovering my love for the written word.

Paulo Coehlo’s Manuscript Found in Accra
reminded me quite a bit of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet
, but that did not stop me from reading Coehlo’s Manuscript because I knew instinctively that it was packed with plent of great insight and spiritual messages. Manuscript Found in Accra did not disappoint…
Among my favorite insights was this one on solitude:
“Without solitude, Love will not stay long by your side.
Because Love needs to rest, so that it can journey through the heavens and reveal itself in other forms.
Without solitude, no plant or animal can survive, no soil can remain productive, no child can learn about life, no artist can create, no work can grow and be transformed.
Solitude is not the absence of Love but its complement.
Solitude is not the absence of company, but the moment when our soul is free to speak to us and help us decide what to do with our life.”
Indeed at every turn of the page, Manuscript Found in Accra, either reminded me of lessons already learned or taught me new ways to look at the context of my life.
I am a big fan of Coehlo’s work… Manuscript Found in Accra is a must read for seekers of knowledge and answers to life’s pressing questions.
