It has been 22 years since I wrote the poem below about a woman who was “broken down” from all she had gone through in her life. She knew she wasn’t alone, there were plenty of other women who also had the “broken down woman blues.” Today, on International Women’s Day, I am reflecting on how far we’ve come in the past 22 years, and recognize we still have a long way to go. Looking through some old writing the other night I ran across this poem and felt it fitting to share on International Women’s Day.
We come together as sisters, the women of the Broken Down Woman Blues. We’ve come to feel that no man will ever save us, that we can only rely on ourselves. We come from abusive relationships, we carry a lot of painful weight as we struggle to find ourselves in a man’s world.
And for some of us, we come together as sisters united by the struggle for our own rights as women, our own empowerment, the idea women still don’t have equality. When we stand up and we keep getting pushed down, we sometimes break down.

Every time I hear this song, 700 Houses, by Susan Tedeschi, I get chills… This is a great live version from the Cazorla Blues Festival on July 25th, 2009:
700 Houses is on Susan Tedeschi’s 2008 release, Back To The River. Her music, whether from her solo career, or with her husband Derek Trucks, in their acclaimed Tedeschi Tricks Band, always speaks to me. In fact, I listen to Tedeschi Trucks frequently to find inspiration before I sit down to write. I find that a little sing along with Susan, goes a long way to tune my voice for the page.

Over the past couple of years, I have had many friends who have suggested I should sell some of my photographs. I’ve always agreed and put the idea on the backburner. Selling my photography is now officially on the hot plate thanks to a couple of folks who saw this photo and make a personal connection with it.
Last week I was contacted about selling prints of this photo of Three Wooden Boats, photographed on the Merrimack River at Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA in July 2012.
I made the sale and in doing so, I was inspired to make some of my favorite photographs available in print here on my website…
Prints of Three Wooden Boats are available in three sizes listed below: (more…)

I believe that every woman is capable of building her own world and should be encouraged to do so:
“How wrong it is for woman to expect the man to build the world she wants, rather than set out to create it herself.” – Anais Nin
