Why I Will Think Twice Before Buying Cynthia Rowley Clothing

I bought* a pair of Cynthia Rowley black pajamas with white piping on them at Marshalls in Newburyport, MA a few weeks ago. Sadly, the pajamas seem to have had way too much black dye in them. Even with washing them multiple times, they have permantly stained a set of white 400 ct cotton damask sheets, a set of pale pink 400 ct cotton damask sheets and a pale pink fleece bathrobe.

Because they are pajamas and they have been worn I can not return them to Marshalls. I’ve soaked everything stained in OxyClean, however the stains did not come out of either set of sheets or the bathrobe.

Book Review: Roses Have Thorns

I just finished reading Roses Have Thorns: A Novel of Elizabeth I last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As a fan of historical fiction, I found Roses Have Thorns to be a wonderfully written trip through a a fascinating time in British history.

Author Sandra Byrd tells the story of Elin von Snakenborg who leaves Sweden at the age of 17 and eventually becomes one of Elizabeth I’s most trusted “ladies.”

Roses Have Thorns is filled with historical details and intrigue.  Elin, who comes to be known as Helena, is a memorable character that kept me engaged through out the entire book.

I am always drawn to fiction about strong women in history, Roses Have Thorns was a delightful read that I had a hard time putting down. Add this one to your must read list if you’re a historical fiction lover!

Spring

By Edna St. Vincent Millay 1892–1950

To what purpose, April, do you return again?
Beauty is not enough.
You can no longer quiet me with the redness
Of little leaves opening stickily.
I know what I know.
The sun is hot on my neck as I observe
The spikes of the crocus.
The smell of the earth is good.
It is apparent that there is no death.
But what does that signify?
Not only under ground are the brains of men
Eaten by maggots.
Life in itself
Is nothing,
An empty cup, a flight of uncarpeted stairs.
It is not enough that yearly, down this hill,
April
Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.

Women and the Presidential Election

Baby boomer aged women, including myself are struggling more in the recession than others, NBC News Economy Watch reports:

A generation of women who flooded the paid labor force in the 1970s has spent the past four decades overcoming a host of obstacles to win its fair share of the American economic pie.

But for many women now approaching what was to have been the end of their careers, the Great Recession has turned out to be the biggest obstacle of their lives.

The recession has been particularly hard for single boomer women like myself:

Incomes for single boomer women have lagged even further behind other households. Since 1970, median incomes for married couples with both spouses in the paid work force have risen steadily – up more than 40 percent to nearly $86,000 (as of 2009). One-income couples and households headed by single men saw little improvement, with median incomes rising to less than $50,000. For single women, the median income, after rising slowly since 1970, barely hit $29,000 in 2009.

While both candidates are working hard and heavy to court the woman’s vote, I personally believe that the candidate that will deliver more for women, including income equality, jobs, education, the right to choice, privacy and health care, is Barack Obama.

Mitt Romney will turn back the clock on women’s issues, and we boomer women can’t afford to go back to the 50’s.

Food For Thought

“It is a woman’s function to mother the world by holding the idea of its possible perfection within her heart. We give birth to children, to men, to businesses, to each other. It is not the uterus but the heart that is our real womb. What emerges from the heart is a co-creation with God.” – Marianne WilliamsonA Woman’s Worth
