The Truth of what is happiness will come if I know how to listen. I must know how to listen to suffering; if I can listen to suffering I can listen to happiness, because that is what I am. ~ The Book of Life: Daily Meditations with Krishnamurti
I am studying Existential Philosophy during Summer semester at UMassAmherst’s UWW. Suffice to say that studying existential philosophy can cause the self to reflect on the themes of the study in a very personal way.
I have struggled throughout my life, yet I still try always to maintain a sense of happiness regardless of my struggles because the very weight of one’s struggling can pull you down into darkness and depression. It is not always easy to maintain a sense of happiness because that weight can be so oppressive that sometimes it takes great deal of strength to throw it off and live life authentically with joy.
J. Krishnamurti says in The Book of Life, “To find the true meaning of happiness, we must explore the river of self-knowledge,” yet he continues, “Self-knowledge is not an end in itself.” There is more than that needed to find true happiness, Krishnamurti contends, happiness is found where you are now, in this moment of time he explains: (more…)
Being in the now is a daily task. One can not simply decide to be in the now and then think that they will be in that space without working at it. It is a practice and like all practices, it takes commitment and work. Nature is always a grounding space for me to take myself out of my self and find the quiet within that is necessary to stay grounded and focused on the now.
At times when I can’t get outside and spend time in the vast expanse of my favorite grounding place, the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, I find a favorite photo of my church, as I call the Refuge, and I open my heart space meditating on the photo.
I remind myself daily that happiness is a choice. Some days are easier than other days, on the path to being the now and that is okay. With daily practice, I have found great comfort in the knowledge that I am responsible for my feelings and actions. Practice makes perfect… While I am no enlightened master, I do know I grateful for the enlightenment I receive in the now.
To Be Empowered – I am willing to see that I can change aspects of who I am, that I may feel no longer fit in my self or my life. However, I am also willing to accept that I am perfect just the way I am. I am not hard on myself, I allow myself to be empowered as I am… ~ Pamela J. Leavey
