Daily Affirmations: In the Still

Dories at Lowell's Boat Shop
Dories at Lowell’s Boat Shop

A boat rarely sits idly in the water. As water is in constant motion, so too is the anchored or moored boat. Our minds are like boats in the water, in constant motion. We think, we analyze, we worry and concern, we plan ahead, look behind and we dream when we are asleep. It takes practice to calm the mind to stillness. That stillness, however brief, is tantamount to a calm moment for a boat in the water.

Today, I re-mind myself to take a moment or more and refine my practice of being in the still. For in those moments of being in the still, comes the greatest clarity.

Daily Affirmations: Getting Things Done

Some days it feels as though I have so much to do and not enough time to get through it all.

As the tasks line up, it becomes easy to get distracted by the idea that there is so much to do and so little time.

Today, I re-mind myself that the way to get things done is to line them up and complete each task, one at a time. I release the concern of getting everything done and replace those thoughts with the positive affirmation that I can do this. In re-aligning my thinking I open myself to manifest completion of each and every task.

Reflections: Blown Off Course

There are times in life when a storm rolls in and it blows you off course. I’ve been working through one of these times in the past 2 – 3 weeks and now I am seeking to regain my center. Always in life, we do the best we can, but sometimes it seems like that isn’t good enough, as pressures and stresses mount, we sometimes look to ease the situation as quickly as possible. That is not always the way to proceed however, because when you are blown off course, you don’t always make good choices in the heat of the moment.

Today, in effort to regain my center, I am focusing on the things I have to be grateful for and letting the rest blow out with the storm. I know and trust that the Universe has my back… Time heals all problems.

Reflections: On The River

I grew up on the Merrimack River, living in two homes that were situated less than a quarter-mile from the banks. The Merrimack has always been a great source of power and inspiration to me. I have fond memories of walking the dirt road from my childhood home to the banks of the river as a small child. When my dad got his first boat, we would motor along the river and I would fill up with delight and wonder, to be out on the river feeling the cool breeze and river mist on my face.

Decades later, when I lived a stones throw from the banks of the river, I could see the wooden dories and skiffs at Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury, from my desk window. They would beckon me at times to grab my camera and capture the afternoon sun on the river and boats.

The river is a constant in my life. Barely a day goes by, since I moved a mile or two inland from it, that I don’t drive along the river and marvel at its powerful tidal currents caused by my close proximity to the ocean. I feel the tug and the lure of the river course through my veins and I am released to flow like the river. It is a stalwart reminder that my life is rich.

Poem: In The Stillness

Solo Swan on the River ~ c. Pamela J. Leavey 2013
Solo Swan on the River ~ c. Pamela J. Leavey 2013

In the stillness
I hear the beating
of the mother’s heart,
in the stillness
I know the pain
of her longing.
I watch, I wait
for her children
to appear,
I know her longing
for it is my own.
I cry out to the Mother
where, oh where could I go,
for I have wandered lonely
in the light of the sun.
She tells me in whisper
Daughter I do not know,
your path is written in the stars
though on the river you do flow.
Sit peacefully in the still
the answers you will know.

Food For Thought: Happiness and Self-Knowledge

lowellsboatsFood For Thought today from J. Krishnamurti’s The Book of Life:

“To find out the true meaning of happiness, we must explore the river of self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is not an end in itself. Is there a source to a stream? Every drop of water from the beginning to the end makes a river. To imagine that we will find happiness at the source is to be mistaken. It is to be found where you are on the river of self-knowledge.”
