Food For Thought: A Flower Bud

Peony Buds
Peony Buds

Treat this day as though it is a flower bud, opening and unfurling its petals as the moments of the day pass on. Each moment, each petal unfurling, is an opportunity for growth and change. We can blossom in our lives as flower bud changes from a tight, young bud to wide open flower, rich and heady with pollen to germinate the seeds of life elsewhere.

We are the cycle of life, as is the flower bud. We gain nothing if we remain tight and closed, a bud unwilling to open. We must look towards each day and unfurl our lives with happiness, gratitude and inspiration to be the most glorious flower we can be. That is living in the moment.

Quote Of The Day: Thoreau

As Henry David Thoreau knew well, a walk in nature always affects the quality of the day…

Get outside and be one with nature, even for just a little while each day!

“To affect the quality of the day,
that is the highest of arts.”

– Henry David Thoreau

Quote of the Day: Sam Keen

My soul-searching, spiritual journey has taken my on some very interesting paths in order to find spiritual truths that answer the questions stirring in my soul. My library is filled with books on various spiritual genre’s. Typically I find if an author speaks to me, I will read most of what they publish.

Wisdom is found in so many places, books are just one of the many avenues a seeker can travel on, in order to find their own truth. Nature is of course, another favorite avenue for seeking truths.

Among my favorite books throughout the years is Sam Keen’s Hymns to an Unknown God: Awakening The Spirit In Everyday Life. The quote below is a favorite from that book:

“Once you have discovered your vocation, it is by no means certain that it will have anything to do with your occupation. A soulful occupation requires us to refrain from using our creativity in socially harmful ways.” – Sam Keen: Hymns to an Unknown God

Daily Affirmations: In The Still

winter on the merrimack riverIn the still, we find answers to our deepest questions. Meditation is not something that comes easy for many people, but I have found that nature helps me find that place where the still exists. As I let myself go and become one with nature, it is in that moment that answers and inspiration arise.

Today, I re-mind myself to take even just a few moments for myself and sit quietly in the still. No music, no TV, indoors or outdoors. No focus, just being in the still. In this I know, this is the deepest communication I can have with my heart space.

Daily Affirmations: Means to An End

Money, abundance, prosperity come to each of us in different forms. Key to receiving is to remember the gratitude quotient as well as acceptance that we have all we need. The affirmation below from Julia Cameron is a favorite…

Bee in the Goldenrod
Bee in the Goldenrod

“Money is a means to an end. It is a servant and not a master. When I ask for money, I am asking for supply. It may come to me as money, but it also may come to me in other forms. I am alert to the many forms my supply may take. While I welcome and receive money as one form, I also welcome and receive supply in all forms it appears.” – Julia Cameron: Heart Steps

Snowy Owls Are Back At the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

snowy owl on a haystackSnowy Owls are back for the winter at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island in the coastal Newburyport, Massachusetts area. I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing my first Snowy Owl the year yet this season, but starting next week when I am finished with my Fall 2014 classes at UMass Amherst’s UWW, I’ll be heading to the Refuge in search of these majestic beauties. Nothing spells rest and relaxation for me more than time outdoors in every season, enjoying the diverse wildlife at my beloved Refuge.

The photo above was taken at the Newbury Salt Marsh, just outside of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, in December 2013. (more…)
