Coyotes on Plum Island

I was driving down to Plum Island this afternoon and had just made the corner at the airport when I spotted an animal walking out past the runway. Having lived in Los Angeles for 19 years, I recognized that it was a coyote. Although I have heard that there are coyote in this area, I had not seen one before this. Coyotes tend to be nocturnal creatures, so I was surprised to see one in the middle of the afternoon, slinking along the salt marsh heading for Plum Island.

I has however heard just yesterday that there was an article in the Newburyport Daily News about a cat missing on Plum Island and the suspicion that it had been caught by a coyote.

Well they are definitely out there on Plum Island.

A commentor on the Newburyport Daily News shared an awesome closeup photo and sighting here.

UPDATE (3/29/11): There was a good follow up piece in the Newburyport Daily News… Life With Suburban Coyotes.

Traveling A Different Route

In the past few months I have been traveling a different route to Newburyport, from my home in Amesbury. I really miss the Hines & Chain bridges that cross the Merrimack River and connect Amesbury to Newburyport. The Hines bridge has been closed since November and the project to build the new bridge will take 18 months to complete. The project appears to be coming along

Sometimes it’s good to travel a different route… New sights… Different vistas… A change of scenery can be good. Still I will be glad when the bridge is open again.

Local News: Deer Ends Up in Newburyport Home

I read about this in today’s Newburyport Daily News, and then when I was leaving work tonight, Fox25 was filming this quick video about the story:

What’s interesting to me is how populated that area of downtown Newburyport is and how on earth a deer ended up there in the middle of the day.

Newburyport: Car Flips Over Whittier Bridge I-95

I was sitting in my den talking to my daughter and her boyfriend tonight when we heard a copter outside. That’s a rarity around here but a sound she and I are accustomed to after living in L.A. for 19 years. We went outside to see what was going on and saw the Whittier Bridge on I-95 over the Merrimack River in Newburyport – Amesbury, MA, was lined with blue and red lights.

FOX 25 reports:

Police got multiple 911 calls from motorists saying they saw a white Toyota Camry go off the bridge and into the water.

They have spotted skid marks that seem indicate a car went over the rails. According to the State Police, troopers from Newbury Barracks, Marine Unit, Dive Team and the Air Wing all reported to the scene.

With Hines Bridge closed, my daughter and I drove down Rt 110 to Rt 1 and over Green Bridge to try to get a look. Newburyport Police were turning people away from the open side of the Chain Bridge who were trying to get a look.

The Coast Guard’s Station Merrimack River has launched both a 25-foot rescue boat and a 47-foot utility boat.  A rescue helicopter has also flown in from Air Station Cape Cod. It’s currenty 8 degrees in Amesbury, just on the other side of the Merrimack River but the water temperature is believed to be about 38-40 degrees. This area of the river is not frozen but it is loaded with ice flows.

There is no word still on how many were in the car and missing or survivors. Local and State Police, Fire Department and Coast Guard are still on the scene.
