Sergei Polunin Dances to Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’

This last Sunday, Annie Lennox and Hozier wowed the Grammy audience performing Hozier‘s breakout hit ‘Take Me To Church’ coupled with Annie Lennox singing Screamin Jay Hawkins ‘I Put a Spell On You,’ which is on her latest CD, Nostalgia.

Hozier and Lennox teaming was all the rage on the internet, managing to go viral very quickly on social media websites, Twitter and Facebook. That was where I first saw it, as I don’t have cable. The short finale clip of Annie Lennox was what drew me to find a video of the full performance, and when I did, I discovered Hozier. I was quickly drawn into the lyrics and arrangement of ‘Take To Me To Church,’ and Hozier’s performance.

The latest mashup of Hozier’s brilliant song, ‘Take Me To Church’ is this incredible dance performance by Russian ballet dancer, Sergei Polunin.

The Silent Sound of Snow Falling

snowchurch

The silent sound of snow falling

Reverential as it is,

Touching all like a blessing

That is new, fresh and pure.

For old snow never falls so delicately,

Once it has landed in its place

Snow changes form,

Like a shape-shifter, morphing

With the winter wind.

Poem: In The Stillness

Solo Swan on the River ~ c. Pamela J. Leavey 2013
Solo Swan on the River ~ c. Pamela J. Leavey 2013

In the stillness
I hear the beating
of the mother’s heart,
in the stillness
I know the pain
of her longing.
I watch, I wait
for her children
to appear,
I know her longing
for it is my own.
I cry out to the Mother
where, oh where could I go,
for I have wandered lonely
in the light of the sun.
She tells me in whisper
Daughter I do not know,
your path is written in the stars
though on the river you do flow.
Sit peacefully in the still
the answers you will know.

Spring

By Edna St. Vincent Millay 1892–1950

To what purpose, April, do you return again?
Beauty is not enough.
You can no longer quiet me with the redness
Of little leaves opening stickily.
I know what I know.
The sun is hot on my neck as I observe
The spikes of the crocus.
The smell of the earth is good.
It is apparent that there is no death.
But what does that signify?
Not only under ground are the brains of men
Eaten by maggots.
Life in itself
Is nothing,
An empty cup, a flight of uncarpeted stairs.
It is not enough that yearly, down this hill,
April
Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.

Until It Sets…

Soft, soft the pale yellow glow
that lights the sky as the day does wane.
The sun in its daily journey
does paint the colors of varied palette,
yellow, gold, pink, purple,
fiery, soft, sparkling, bright
until it sets and it is night.
