Reflections: A Branch to Hold Me

I am a typically upbeat person who believes that happiness is a choice. However, sometimes the weight of life drags me down, just as it does everyone. In those times I have a tendency to long for something more in my life–a shoulder to lean on, a branch to hold me.

Like the dogwood, getting its strength from the limbs of the tree, we all subsist and draw strength from the branches and stems that hold us up in life. I’ve been a flower without benefit of that which holds me up for a very long time. Still I blossom and grow. Yet, there is that knowledge deep inside of my soul that recognizes that this flower is still like every other flower that flourishes best when there is sustenance not only within but without as well.

Reflections: Blown Off Course

There are times in life when a storm rolls in and it blows you off course. I’ve been working through one of these times in the past 2 – 3 weeks and now I am seeking to regain my center. Always in life, we do the best we can, but sometimes it seems like that isn’t good enough, as pressures and stresses mount, we sometimes look to ease the situation as quickly as possible. That is not always the way to proceed however, because when you are blown off course, you don’t always make good choices in the heat of the moment.

Today, in effort to regain my center, I am focusing on the things I have to be grateful for and letting the rest blow out with the storm. I know and trust that the Universe has my back… Time heals all problems.

Namaste…

Reflections: On The River

I grew up on the Merrimack River, living in two homes that were situated less than a quarter-mile from the banks. The Merrimack has always been a great source of power and inspiration to me. I have fond memories of walking the dirt road from my childhood home to the banks of the river as a small child. When my dad got his first boat, we would motor along the river and I would fill up with delight and wonder, to be out on the river feeling the cool breeze and river mist on my face.

Decades later, when I lived a stones throw from the banks of the river, I could see the wooden dories and skiffs at Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury, from my desk window. They would beckon me at times to grab my camera and capture the afternoon sun on the river and boats.

The river is a constant in my life. Barely a day goes by, since I moved a mile or two inland from it, that I don’t drive along the river and marvel at its powerful tidal currents caused by my close proximity to the ocean. I feel the tug and the lure of the river course through my veins and I am released to flow like the river. It is a stalwart reminder that my life is rich.

Reflections: Communication

Sometimes the lines of communication between people get blurred. In reflection we can find many reasons for communication to become blurred, but in soul-searching, we weed through those reasons and ask ourselves the questions of why and what forms our reasoning in how we feel about and relate to other people.

It is there in the reflection that we begin to see things clearly, if we take the time to listen to heart and remove judgment from our mind. It can be easy to judge others, however, learning to accept others for who they are, may not always come so easily to some of us.

Many years ago when I began to study A Course In Miracles, I learned one of the greatest lessons in my life… How a person shows up in my life, who they are in my world, it was matters most. Anything peripheral to that, is not for me to judge.

Reflections: Changing Tides

I’ve always been partial to the low tide at the beach, for when the ocean recedes for a few hours twice daily for the low tide exposes an expansive beach that becomes a playground of earthly and aquatic delights. The landscape changes, tidal pools form, and a treasure trove of shells, stones, beach glass worn smooth, drift wood, sea weed and other offerings from the ocean appear on the sand, waiting patiently to be claimed once again by the sea, or to be pocketed by a beachcomber who will revere that object with special memories for a long time to come.

Reflections: The Solitary Swan

The solitary swan glides across the azure pool of water, alone. There is no mate at its side. The life of the solitary person is much like the life of the solitary swan, fending and faring for itself, not relying on another in times of need. Sometimes the person, like the swan longs for the support of a mate, but adept at caring for oneself, the solitary person learns that to survive in the world, they must go it alone, against the odds, no matter what.

In solitude, we learn our mettle and our weaknesses. Yet, we gather our strengths the storms that rattle our lives and move through with grace, like the solitary swan. These are the lessons of nature…
