A Salt Pannes Sunset

Every sunset on the Salt Pannes of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is magically different with the weather and seasons. For over 50 years I have marveled at this ever changing vista that takes my breath away with every viewing.

Waiting for Signs of Spring

This winter has been challenging as it piles on the snow. But soon the Spring shall come and the Winter past shall be but a memory…

Daily Affirmations: Impermanence and Gratitude

As I watch Mother Nature begin to wreck havoc today with her wild wilds, rains and storm surges across the North East, I am re-minded of the impermanence of all things and I am filled with gratitude for all that nature gifts to us. May you all stay safe in the wake of Hurricane Sandy… ~ Pamela J. Leavey

Sandy Point and Hurricane Sandy

When I was a small child, my family camped on this beach every summer for a few years. Sandy Point State Reservation, is at the southern tip of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, camping has been banned there now for decades.

When I was there a week ago, we were already experiencing extremely high tides. With Hurricane Sandy heading up the East Coast poised to possibly converge with a Nor’easter, I anticipate the hide tides at Sandy Point, and the entire area to be even higher than we’ve seen here in the last week.

The storm could also effect voting in the areas hard hit, which might just impact election results.

I love a good storm… but my hope is Sandy calms down before she strikes my area.

Reflections: Nothing In Life Is Ever Permanent

It’s a grey day here on the river today, with snow falling for the past 24 hours now. I have been reflecting today on losing something you think you found but really didn’t. In the blink of an eye, the sun shone through the clouds and lifted my heart up into the heavens, and I basked it’s warm and comfortable embrace…

And then it slipped away, back through the clouds and left me bereft of understanding as to where it went. But, alas, I do know that nothing in life is ever permanent. We struggle with loss and grief, and naturally we should. We learn from loss and grief, and naturally we should. And then, we move on.

Life is the grand hall of learning. It shapes who we are, and leaves us all with indelible impressions, called memories, that give us pause to reflect. We can reflect on the sadness, but we must always remember the joy.

On The River: Early Signs of Spring

We wait with anxious excitement as Winter wanes, for early signs of Spring.

This Winter has been so unseasonably warm and we’ve had no significant snow what-so-ever.

Today I discovered the first signs of early Spring in my front perrenial garden…

Three little newly sprouted yellow crocuses:

I could see signs of more crocuses sprouting through the garden, that sorely needs to be cleaned up… Keep sprouting little crocuses… I look forward to your purple friends to show their faces soon.
