My Writing Life: Little Red Pays a Visit

I was hoping my move to the river a few weeks ago would provide me for good inspiration for my writing. It has taken me sometime to settle in to my new place and that has been a distraction from school, and of course my writing. The inspiration is starting to kick in, I am happy to say.

Writing has been my life and I’ve never fulfilled writing what I really wanted to write about so I am working on that now while I am working on BA at UMass Amherst University Without Walls where I am majoring in Creative Writing and Communication in the Digital Age.

I had a visitor to my front porch this morning. A little red squirrel who eventually started tearing into an old cushion on beat up wicker chair with a basket of fake forsythia in it. I grabbed the cameras. And then I grabbed my big 8.5″ x 11″ journal and started writing. I”ll take it… one page at a time.

Daily Affirmations: Passion

Today, I re-mind myself that my passion is the fertilizer for the fruits of my labor. I am rich with passion for what I do and it is a catalyst for me to excel on this and every day. I know in my heart that I am capable of achieving whatever I set my mind to. In this I sow the seeds for success and I prepare to launch myself on a powerful trajectory towards my goals. Intent makes manifest….

Ode to the Whip-poor-will: When Darkness Falls

As a small child living in rural Massachusetts on summer nights, I would fall asleep to the call of the Eastern Whip-poor-will. When Darkness Falls is my ode to the climate change endangered Whip-poor-will…

Whip-poor-will_flying_AudubonWhen darkness falls
And the night is still,
I think of the lonely Whip-poor-will
Who calls his name out
To the night
Like longing plea to end his plight.
Yet who’s to say his cry be right
For he alone does know his cry
What voice he speak
I only can try
To listen deeply in the still
To know what be the Mighty will
And yet I long to hear
His mournful plea
To answer yet the plea
Of mine own heart
When darkness falls
And the night is still
I think of the lonely Whip-poor-will.

From Audubon on the Eastern Whip-poor-will:

The Eastern Whip-poor-will is strictly nocturnal and stays hidden for the most of the day, only coming out in the evening to forage for insects. It’s most active in the dim light of dawn and dusk, but may continue foraging all night if the moon is bright enough. During the breeding season, it lays its eggs directly on the forest floor, where the parents take turns incubating them. Mostly a solitary creature, the bird spends most of its resting time perched motionless and alone in low-hanging branches.

Quote of the Day: Pema Chodron

“Being fully present isn’t something that happens once and then you have achieved it; it’s being awake to the ebb and flow and movement and creation of life, being alive to the process of life itself. That also has its softness. If there were a goal that you were supposed to achieve, such as “no thoughts,” that wouldn’t be very soft. You’d have to struggle a lot to get rid of all those thoughts, and you probably couldn’t do it anyway. The fact that there is no goal also adds to the softness.” ~ Pema Chodron

New England’s Best Beaches

The Boston Globe names Crane Beach in Ipswich one of New England’s Best Beaches. It is great to see this local beach made the list:

We happen to love Crane Beach, with its undulating dunes and secret maritime forest, and so do the folks at NationalGeographic.com. They hailed it as one of the Top 10 US Family Beaches. “Calm waters, warm tidal pools, and on-site amenities such as a snack bar . . . make this an ideal destination for families,” they noted. Not to mention the pure powdery-softness of the sand, and the cool views of the Great House, rising over the beach.

I know Crane Beach is a fabulous beach for the reasons the Boston Globe cites, warm tidal pools and powdery soft sands but for me there is a beach that rises above the cut of all of New England’s Best Beaches and that beach has a view of Crane Beach. (more…)

Daily Affirmations: Open Heart

snowy owl

Today, I re-mind myself that an open heart that is sincere and compassionate fuels my own confidence and self-esteem as well as giving comfort and solace to others. I acknowledge that my open heart may be vulnerable to grief and sadness as well as happiness and joy, however all relationships bring teachings that we may learn from them. All relationships are assignments… There is something we must learn, something we must give, something we must receive in those assignments. This is all part of the lesson.

Namaste… Pamela
